Training Courses and Equipment

All training programs consist of both morning and afternoon sessions ensuring the maximum benefit in the minimum time. a recreational day approximately every three days for you to rest and enjoy the local attractions and the beauty of the Sunshine Coast. Throughout the week the training can be alternated and varied between different equipment to give you exposure to different surf sport craft.

Surf Sports Equipment.
Ski
Training on a racing ski is always a challenge whether you are new to this craft or have been paddling for sometime. You will be using the latest in ski and paddle technology.

Malibu Board
Malibu board racing was originally conceived to help improve skills when using the board for rescues. Now it is one of the most exciting spectator sports at a surf carnival.

Surf Boat
Surf Boat racing is one of the oldest events within surf lifesaving. This craft is one of the most spectacular and demanding events on the beach. Always a great crowd pleaser when the surf is running, it is fast becoming the premier event at surf carnivals throughout the world of surf lifesaving.

Ironman
The Ironman event is one of the most demanding events in the Lifesaving competitor’s calendar. It is a combination of the surf ski, Malibu board, running and swimming. You will receive coaching on how to incorporate all these disciplines for an Ironman event.

Run & Gym
Assisting to provide you with all round fitness and strength you will train with a fitness and conditioning coach while running alongside some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. The gym is of a professional and modern standard within the Mooloolaba Surf Club.


What training do we offer?


The Australian Surf Lifeguard Academy offers a range of training courses from beginners (to assist new lifesavers) to advanced, catering for those who are looking for qualifications as a professional lifeguard as well as surf sports coaching for those looking to achieve their best in their chosen discipline.


Bronze Medallion Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

This is the entry-level course for any person wishing to become a lifesaver or lifeguard. 40 hours of training is provided over a two-week period.


Advanced Lifesaving Certificate (Gold Medallion)
The Bronze Medallion and Senior First Aid Certificates are pre-requisites before commencement of the Advanced Lifesaver Certificate. This certificate is internationally recognised and enables the holder to seek work as a Professional lifeguard. The training for this course involves approximately 60 hours of intense physical and mental activity. You will train days and nights to successfully complete this course within the two-week time frame. The average day will be, 2 x 2 hour sessions throughout the day and 2 hours in the evenings.


Surf Sports Training
Within this course you can specify your discipline, (for example Ironman), to enable your training to centre on your needs we cater for all levels of ability. Or you can train in areas as varied as Surfboats to Malibu boards in the same day to give you a well rounded experience of surf sports competition. Your trainers are some of Australia’s most successful competitors and instructors. This course runs for two weeks and you will be given approximately 50 hours of personal instruction.


Surf Sports & Beach Rescue Course
This course is a well-designed blend of surf sport and beach rescue skills, it consists of over 27 days of personal instruction and gives you the opportunity to obtain qualifications and experience in all the three programs above.


Lifeguard for the day, Lifesaver for life

Lifesaver for the Day offers a unique opportunity to build on or establish the necessary team building and leadership skills in your employees required to advance your business.
How? Physical activity and team sports are proven catalysts in bringing out the best in people. These skills are transferable to your business with many successful sports people proving to be winners in the boardroom.

Learning to use sports craft in an environment such as the surf can at times be a considerable challenge to many people. As a ‘Lifesaver for the Day’ your employees will be presented with obstacles that they must overcome, very quickly realising the best way to do so is by working as part of a team Mooloolaba beach on the Sunshine Coast is the perfect venue to be a ‘Lifesaver for the Day’, the conditions on Mooloolaba beach can prove challenging but at the same time the degree of difficulty can be managed due to the natural shape and North East facing aspect of the beach.

Mooloolaba beach gives the participants a spectacular view of the breathtaking vistas surrounding them. With views to Old Women Island, Mt Coolum and Mt Ninderry and beside them is the Mooloolah river mouth with trawlers and yachts coming and going throughout the day. The Mooloolaba Surf Club is an idyllic venue to host CPR training with first-rate facilities as well as being a beautiful setting to enjoy a relaxing BBQ lunch.

Lifeguard for the Day Lifesaver for Life is offered as a half day (finish at 1.00pm) or full day option that includes a nationally certified CPR course as well as lunch and a chance for your team to put their new skills of using surf craft to good practice with their very own mini-surf carnival, this will really bring out the team player in your people.

Format for half day:

  • Briefing: 7.00am – 7.30am
  • Instructions on use of craft: Double racing skis, rescue Malibu boards, surfboats, rescue tubes 7.45am-9.45am
  • Return to training room to commence CPR: 10.00am – 1.00pm
  • Time will be taken out to have morning tea to ensure physical condition


Format for full day:

  • Briefing: 7.00am – 7.30am
  • Instructions on use of craft: Double racing skis, rescue malibu boards,
    surfboats, rescue tubes 7.45am – 10.00am
  • Return to training room for morning tea: 10.15am – 10.30am
  • Commence CPR course: 10.30am – 12.00pm
  • BBQ Lunch: 12.00pm – 1.00pm
  • Complete CPR course: 1.00pm – 2.30pm
  • Return to beach for mini-surf carnival 2.45pm – 3.45pm
  • Return to club for presentation of winners and CPR course

 

Meet your Instructors

 

Michael King

Michael King

Michael commenced his 30 year involvement in Surf Lifesaving at the age of six by joining as a Nipper. Since that time Michael has achieved enormous success in Ironman competition.

Michael’s highlights include:

  • 2nd World Ocean Man Series 1991
  • 1st Coolangatta Gold Ironman 1992
  • 2nd Uncle Toby Series 1993/1994
  • 1st Uncle Toby Series 1994/1995

Michael currently holds a Level 2 High Performance Coaching Certificate and in 1999 Michael established the ‘Michael King Ironman Academy’ specialising in training of Australian Surf Lifesavers in Ironman competition.



Steve Davies

Steve Davies

Steve started competing as a Surf Lifesaver in under 18 Surf Boat competitions at the age of 15. Since that time Steve has had great success in all categories of Surf Boat competition including the Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles.

Steve’s accomplishments include:

  • 1st Reserve grade 2005 Australian Open
  • 1st Under 19 2005 Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 2nd Under 21 2005 Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 1st A Grade Medal 2004 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 1st Under 19 2002 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 1st Reserve Grade 1989 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 2nd A Grade 1994 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 2nd Under 19 1984 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 3rd Under 21 2003 - Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles

Plus: 7 Gold & 5 Bronze Medals in State competition
In the 2003-2004 season Steve trained and swept two crews successfully winning every series of competition on offer.

Steve is a qualified Bronze Medallion Certificate holder for Surf Lifesaving Australia, holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate and Level 1 Coaching Surf Boat Rowing.



Jason Baunach

Jason Baunach

Jason started competing as a Junior Surf Lifesaver (nipper) and then became involved in Outrigger racing where he won 3 Australian titles in under 19 and 21 age division.

Jason began rowing Surf Boats as a 17 year old and has enjoyed great success at State and National levels winning Gold (first place) in the Under 21 category at state and Bronze (third place) at The Australian Lifesaving National level.

The highlight of Jason’s career came in 2003-2004 season winning the Open division of the Surf Boat competition at the Australian National Surf Lifesaving Titles.

Jason has also competed in the Gold Coast marathon where he finished 11th in his age division in 2003.

Jason is a qualified Bronze Medallion Certificate holder for Surf Lifesaving Australia and Royal Lifesaving and holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate.



Peter McGreal

Peter McGreal

Peter has been a member of Surf Lifesaving Australia since 1989 when he began his training in The Bronze Medallion to patrol beaches.

Peter began his competition career in Surf Lifesaving as a Ski paddler at the age of 15 and continued to paddle Skis until the age of 19 when he begun to race Surf Boats. His highlights in Surf Boats include but are not restricted to the following:

  • 1st Reserve Grade Medal 1989 – Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles
  • 1st A Grade 1990 – Queensland State Titles
  • 1st A Grade 1991 – Queensland State Titles

In the 1991-1992 season Peter trained an Under 18’s Surf Boat crew to win the Australian Surf Lifesaving National Titles.

Peter has an intimate understanding of the operation of a surf club having held positions of Club Captain, Patrol Captain and Manager of a Surf Lifesaving Supporters Club licensed bar and restaurant.

Peter was also employed as a professional lifeguard for two years.

Peter brings with him 25 years of knowledge and experience in beach safety, Lifesaving competition and operation of a modern Surf Lifesaving Club.



Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club

Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club was established in 1922.

It now has a membership of 16,000 individuals including the Supporter’s Club members and Active Lifesavers.

The Club has a proud history of producing National Surf Lifesaving Champions.

Mooloolaba Beach awarded the ‘Tidy Beach Award’ of Queensland in 2000.
